What is The Best Diet For Long-Term Weight Loss?

What Is The Best Diet For Long Term Weight LossThe best diet for long-term weight-loss is a question frequently asked. At Nutrition Wellness, the goal is to help people lose weight and become the best version of themselves. There is an effective solution to losing weight and it incorporates physical activity, low carbohydrates/higher protein, Intuitive eating, losing the weight and loving yourself. If these principles are followed with my guidance, I believe you will see the positive weight loss goals that you are searching for. These foundational principles are what I shape my programs around, including meal plans and nutritional guidance, all in the efforts to help clients succeed on their weight loss journey. The power lies within you and you can do it! Now let’s get started!

As a Registered Dietitian, Nutrition Therapist, and Wellness coach, I explain the energy balance equation which explains why we gain and lose weight. The science behind this states that if more calories are consumed then expended, weight gain occurs. Whereas, if more calories are exerted or burned throughout the day than consumed, weight loss occurs. Aside from certain genetic conditions, (e.g. hypothyroidism), this equation will most likely hold true. In reference to physical activity, I encourage walking as a primary step since it is something that can be done on a daily basis. If medically feasible, walking and getting in a certain amount of steps a day, is an effective goal to shoot for and continue on a regular basis. This physical activity and burning of calories will ultimately contribute to successful weight loss.

Next, intuitive eating is explained and what intuitive eating is. Intuitive eating is honoring your body’s hunger signals and is what tells us to stop eating when we are full or satiated. We are conditioned since we are kids to clean our plates. Nowadays, portion sizes have become double or triple the size. Instead of wrapping ¼ to ½ of our plates to go, many feel compelled to finish all of their food. Taking those extra bites do help to contribute to putting on those extra unwanted pounds and lead to the dreaded weight gain and obesity epidemic we are seeing in today’s society. Asking yourself if you are truly hungry and should I take another bite, is key to honoring your body’s hunger signals and is what intuitive eating is all about. This mindset can be developed over time and become instinctive to where we can sense whether we are eating for emotional comfort, or are truly hungry.

Thirdly, it is important to lower carbohydrates and increase protein. Cutting back on foods such as breads, pasta, rice, cereals, candy, cake, potato chips, etc. is another important key to weight loss. Lowering carbohydrate intake and increasing proteins such as fish, chicken, eggs, and cottage cheese is necessary to do to lose weight. At Nutrition Wellness, we develop a meal plan, offer nutritional guidance, coaching, support, and classes on how to effectively lose weight and keep it off for the long haul. A client’s BMI is taken and from there it is determined whether they are within normal range, overweight, or obese. From here, we work together to come up with a meal plans cut calories and incorporate the right type of high protein, low carbohydrate foods into the diet.

At Nutrition Wellness, loving yourself and losing weight go hand in hand. Through losing weight and changing physically, this allows a client to not only develop a better relationship with food, but it also makes a person feel better about themselves. As we start to feel better about ourselves physically, we can then start feeling better about ourselves mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This is part of the wellness theme that we work on and realize that self- love is an important theme of our weight loss journey. We are transforming into healthier versions of ourselves and require self- love to do so. As we take care of our bodies, we are slowly transforming our exterior. Through self-love and getting in touch with our inner selves (through breathing, meditation), we become more grounded and secure in who we are. Weight loss is very possible and you can achieve it! It is all about developing the right mindset and understanding what foods to eat regularly, and which to cut back on. Understanding the principle of the energy balance equation is a strong foundation. The action plan incorporates the physical activity guidance (walking or if medically feasible, a structured workout plan), intuitive eating, lower carbohydrates/high protein, loving yourself and continuing on this weight loss journey to success. The power lies within all of us and it is just a matter of unleashing it to gain its full potential. This is all part of the mind, body, soul aspect of wellness that ties so strongly to the physical weight loss platform.
