Just what are flaxseeds and how can they benefit us? Growing up I remember being around family members who enjoyed taking flaxseed regularly, usually flaxseed oil, and wondered back then- what are the benefits of flaxseed and how can it help one’s body to transform into a greater version of yourself?

As I matured and ultimately became a registered dietitian, I know flaxseeds have several benefits to the body. What are some of these benefits and how can they help clients on their weight loss journey, as well as their overall health journey?

Eating ground flaxseed has been found to have numerous benefits. Listed below are several of the most common.

  • Flaxseeds are high in omega 3-fatty acids, which is great. As we know omega 3 fatty acids are important in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, reducing Metabolic Syndrome and reducing the risk of cardiac death.

  • Flaxseeds help lower blood pressure. How? Fatty acids, lignans and fiber all work together to treat and prevent hypertension or chronic high blood pressure.

  • Protects Against Cancer– Flaxseeds have antioxidant properties that help protect against cancer.

  • Balances Blood Sugar– Since flaxseeds are high in fiber content, flax seeds are considered a low glycemic food, which means they have a glycemic index number of 55 or less. The lower the number, the less impact (or slower) the food has an impact on your blood sugar.

  • Fights Inflammation– This is wonderful news for all of you who suffer from inflammation. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, or obesity, ingesting flaxseeds regularly can help inhibit the production of major markers of inflammation.

  • Prevents constipation– Eating just 2 tbsp of ground flaxseed provide 16% of the recommended daily intake (RD) of fiber for the entire day. Flaxseeds act as a stool softener.

  • Supports Weight Loss– How can flaxseeds help us lose weight? Well, since flaxseeds are rich in proteins, if you consume 1 teaspoon of flax seeds along with fiber, the protein content suppresses your appetite and prevents you from overeating.

  • Plant based protein– In one tablespoon, flaxseeds contain 1.9 g of protein making it a plant-based protein comparable to soybean.

  • Helps with Symptoms of Menopause- Flaxseeds are known to improve symptoms of menopause and reduce the occurrence of hot flashes and improve mood and overall quality of life.

  • Flaxseeds Improves Skin Health- Flaxseeds are known to have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent damage to your skin. Since flaxseeds have high levels of phytochemicals and antioxidants, they are known to protect against fine lines and wrinkles, making them a great wonderful addition to your beauty regimen.

Overall, flaxseeds are known to have several health benefits and are high in omega 3 fatty-acids, lowers blood pressure, and protects against cancer. With the additional health benefits listed above, it is worth incorporating some ground flaxseed into your diet. You can start buy adding 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseed into your hot or cold cereal, salads or sandwiches just to name a few. The goal is to try and incorporate flaxseed into your daily routine so you can reap the many benefits of this wonderful plant based protein.
